Brunswick To Offer $11,995 Electric Outboard-Powered Boat

Brunswick To Offer $11,995 Electric Outboard-Powered Boat

Electric-powered boats are nothing new—small, calm lakes and waterways across the country have been dotted with them for decades. Based in Adelanto, Calif., Duffy, for example, has been building electric boats for 53 years.

Coming this spring, the all-new Veer X13 with Mercury Marine’s 7.5e electric outboard motor as a power option.

But offered at $11,995, the new Veer X13 is intriguing to entry-level boat owners, and not simply because of its price tag. The 13-footer can be powered by either Mercury Marine’s Avator 7.5e electric outboard motor or a FourStroke gasoline-powered outboard engine from the Fond du Lac, Wis., company.

“Recreational boating and fishing are enjoying increasing popularity with younger and more diverse consumers,” said Matt Atilano, Veer’s  director of strategy, in a Brunswick Corporation press release. “We identified a gap in the marketplace and a need to create a more targeted and modern experience for these new boaters, which inspired the design and development of the Veer brand.”

Translation? An affordable powerboat for a younger and broader audience that—minus the electric outboard option—might otherwise not be interested in powerboating.

Both the Veer X13 and the Avator 7.5e electric outboard were unveiled this week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Each is the first model in its respective product line.

The rotomolded, polyethylene Veer X13 was designed by engineers at Lund Boats, a Brunswick-held brand in New York Mills, Minn. According to the release, the Avator propulsion system “offers quiet, all-electric power—integrated with intuitive controls and advanced digital displays—and produces no direct emissions.”

The company will begin take orders this spring. Top speed numbers for the Veer X13 have not been released.
