New ‘Qatar’ Mystic Owner Sets Sights On Breaking Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Record

New ‘Qatar’ Mystic Owner Sets Sights On Breaking Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Record

The owner/operator of Darana Hybrid Electro-Mechanical Solutions in Hamilton, Ohio, Darryl Cuttell is an ambitious, high-energy guy. The Canada-born, Tuscarora Native American Nation-member bought the International Hot Rod Association in late 2024 with the hope of returning the group to its former glory. More recently and relevant for go-fast boating fans, Cuttell bought the 50-foot Qatar Mystic catamaran—the actual name of the boat is Al Adaa’am 96—that set the current all-time Lake of the Ozarks Shootout speed-record of 244 mph on the then-one-mile course.

Cuttell is hoping to bring back the cat, powered by twin T-55 turbine engines each making 3,800 hp, to its former greatness as well. With Curtis at his side in the throttleman seat, he’s plans to break the Shootout record, which was set by Curtis and Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani of Qatar in 2014.

Though the course was shortened to three-quarters of a mile several years ago, Cuttell believes the record can be broken in that distance.

“That boat has always intrigued me,” said Cuttell who has been boating since he was a child and currently owns a six high-performance boats, from a 47-foot Fountain V-bottom to  40-foot Mystic catamaran to a Mystic M5200 center console. “The turbine engines were starving for air so we are going to create a couple of scoops/inlets for them. They have been operating at 80 percent of their maximum powerboat capability. We’re going to turn them up to 110 percent.”

Set by this group in 2014, the Lakes of Ozarks Shootout record stands at 244 mph.

The catamaran’s predominantly burgundy Qatar graphics will be replaced with the green-and-white livery of Darana Hybrid Electro-Mechanical Solutions. Cuttell also plans to have Curtis, who will store and work on the 50-footer at his shop in Stuart, Fla., get its interior updated/renovated.

“We’ll be making some changes to it,” Curtis said, then chuckled. “Darryl is really into breaking the Shootout record, and so am I.”

Added Cuttell, “Steve and I are both on the same page—we’re already friends. His heart is into this thing. They’ve already started working on it.”
