Buis And Turk Bringing ‘X-Factors’ To Cat 300 Class

Buis And Turk Bringing ‘X-Factors’ To Cat 300 Class

Heading into the offshore racing season, which kicks off May 15-18 in Cocoa Beach, Fla., 16-year-old throttleman Owen Buis and 18-year-old driver Cameron Turk look as strong as any team in the the Cat 300 class. Buis and Turk already have proven themselves by earning world and national titles in other classes. At their tender ages, both are members of the American Power Boat Association Hall of Champions.

The spec-class Cat 300 category is expected to grow steadily this season.

And like several teams in several classes, they’ll once-again have backing from XINSURANCE, which is sponsoring multiple offshore racing campaigns again this season.

They’ll be a formidable duo in their canopied, 24-foot Wicked catamaran powered by a Mercury 300R outboard engine. Despite that they comprise the youngest cockpit-paring in the spec-class ranks this season, they could be considered the pre-season class-favorites based on their experience and track-records in the sport.

Plus, they don’t lack for confidence.

Turk and Buis are bringing their impressive game into the spec-class catamaran ranks.

“We got the title locked,” Buis said, then laughed. “Our crew is crazy committed to this program and were putting countless hours into this thing. We’ve been re-rigged the boat and making some ergonomic fixes inside the cockpit.”

Despite that they have never shared the cockpit of a raceboat in competition, the equally ambitious Turk shares his younger teammate’s goal.

“We are trying to go all out with the Nationals and the Worlds and hopefully stay on the podium every single race,” Turk said.

Buis and Turk will unveil their re-wrapped 24-footer during the Cocoa Beach event. Though an entry list is not yet available for the season-opener, three Cat 300 teams are expected take the green flag that weekend.

“I think by the end of the season, we should have six teams in this class,” Buis said.
