Garmin Enhances Boater Safety with New AIS Warning Messaging on Chartplotters

OLATHE, Kan./April 3, 2025 – Garmin (NYSE: GRMN), the world’s leading marine electronics manufacturer, has released a software update for select GPSMAP® and ECHOMAP™ chartplotters. This update introduces AIS (Automatic Identification System) warning messaging to improve on-water safety and reduce collision risks.
AIS technology delivers real-time data on nearby vessels’ location, speed, and heading. With this update, compatible Garmin chartplotters now support addressed and broadcast AIS messages (types 12 and 14), displaying onscreen alerts from AIS-equipped devices. These alerts notify boaters about floating hazards or entry into protected areas like North Atlantic right whale zones.
Supported devices include Garmin’s GPSMAP 9000, 9500, 8600 series, 7×3/9×3/12×3/16×3, and 10×2/12×2 series, as well as ECHOMAP Ultra 2 and UHD2 models. To use the new AIS warning feature, a compatible AIS-capable device—such as the Garmin AIS™ 800 transceiver, VHF 215 AIS radio, or Cortex® V1—is required.
Available now, this feature is part of the free Q2 2025 marine software update via the ActiveCaptain® app or Garmin Express™. For full update details, visit Garmin’s official marine software page.
Garmin continues to lead the way in marine innovation, earning the NMEA Manufacturer of the Year title for ten straight years. Learn more at the Garmin Newsroom, follow @garminmarine, or check out the Garmin blog.
