MTI At 25—Project Mayhem, The Prequel

If you’re new to the MTI family, there’s a good chance you recognize Mark and Britney Godsey’s Project Mayhem catamaran as a 2021 model-year 39-footer powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines. But the Chattanooga, Tenn.-based couple formerly owned a 38-foot MTI cat of the same name and powered by powered by a pair of 1,100-hp Mercury Racing turbocharged stern-drive engines.

The only 38-foot catamaran built by MTI, Project Mayhem was well-known in high-performance boating circles.

The Wentzville, Mo., company completed the 38-footer for the couple in early 2013. It rides on the same hull as the 36-foot MTI cat—a two-foot bustle adds the extra length. It is the only 38-foot cat the company ever built. And it almost came equipped with “lesser” power.

“I was going with the( twin) 700 package, but literally the day before the motors were to be ordered I went with the 1100s,” Mark Godsey explained. “I was so glad I did. In the 6 years I owned the boat, I did not have one issue.

“The power was unreal,” he continued. “It would jump from 40 mph to 120 mph so quickly.

Project Mayhem boasted speakers mounted on the undersides of its deck hatches.

The couple campaigned the catamaran at poker runs around the country, where it was a consistent head-turner at the docks or on its tilt trailer thanks to the its in-house paintjob and eye-catching bustle.

“I’m proud to say I converted several V-bottom owners into cat owner thanks to riding in that boat,” said Godsey. “It was great for tie-ups as well. The built-in sunpad, upgraded stereo and slanted bustle made it fun.

“We definitely made a lot of memories with that 38 MTI,” he added.
