Mercury Racing Introducing New 250 APX Outboard For Formula 1 Powerboat Championship Series

Mercury Racing has added another model to its APX line of four-stroke outboard engines for tunnel-boat racing—specifically for the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship Series, which the Fond du Lac, Wis., company is sponsoring again this season. Dubbed the APX 250, the 250-hp V-8 engine is the newest addition to a competition outboard line that includes 60-, 200- and 360-hp offerings.

The news was announced this morning in a press release from the Fond du Lac, Wis., company.

“Mercury Racing was born out of competition,” said Jeff Broman, the director of Mercury Racing, in the release. “Expanding our Apex Series portfolio with this new V8 and partnering with F1 Powerboat Championship as a season sponsor demonstrates our commitment to tunnel boat racing and leading the pack while doing so. The 250 APX is going to take race teams to the next level of competition.”

As part of its 2024 sponsorship package, Mercury Racing will be the “official marine engine and drive sponsor of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship series” and continue to provide its race support team in the pits at Formula 1 races in the United States.

A 250-hp V-8 outboard engine is the newest model in Mercury Racing’s APX Series.

“My family’s powerboat-racing history mirrors that of Mercury Racing,” said Tim Seebold, the managing director of F1 Powerboat Championship, in the release. “We’ve both been around for 50 years and the introduction of the 250 APX strengthens Mercury Racing’s commitment to the future of our series, the competitors and the high-performance marine market. The company will still offer and support the V-6 200 APX outboard engine currently used an “entry point to competition in F1,”according to the release, :as not all race boats in the series are compatible with the 250 APX.”
