Mercury Racing Adds 60-HP Model To APX Competition-Outboard Line

Designed for Formula 4 tunnel-boat racing, the Mercury Racing APX 60 outboard engine was unveiled this week at the Dubai Boat Show in the United Arab Emirates. The 60-hp four-stroke, low-emissions outboard joins the 360- and 200-hp APX series of tunnel-boat racing engines from Fond du Lac, Wis., company.

The 60 APX is the latest offering in Mercury Racing’s series of engines for tunnel-boat competition.

The news was announced yesterday in a Mercury Racing press release.

“We’ve designed this motor to deliver strong performance with minimal maintenance over the course of a full season, reducing the cost of participation in the entry classes for professional tunnel boat competition,” said Jeff Broman, director, Mercury Racing.

Intended as an entry-level class for enclosed-cockpit tunnel-boat racing, Formula 4 features composite, driver capsule-equipped tunnel-boats approximately 12 feet 10 inches long. Minimum vessel weight—including driver—is 793 pounds and top is 75 mph. The category is particularly popular with youngsters in Europe and the Middle East, according to the release.

Maximum operating range of the 60 APX outboard is 6,000 to 6,400 rpm. The engine four-cylinder runs on 87-octane fuel.
