During a press event yesterday at its Lake X product development and testing facility, Mercury Marine introduced the first-ever V-10 outboard engines in the form of 350- and 400-hp Verado models. According to a press release from the Fond du Lac, Wis., company, the SmartCraft compatible, 5.7-liter engines are the quietest in their class.

“The all-new Mercury V-10 Verado outboards are exactly what boaters have been asking for in a 350 and 400hp platform,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president the release. “They are powerful, smooth and quiet. They have many of the same fuel efficiency-enhancing features that are synonymous with our high-horsepower lineup. They also deliver the same kind of premium boating experience that has made Verado outboards legendary. The V-10 Verado outboards solidify Mercury’s leadership position in the high-horsepower outboard market.”
Naturally aspirated, the V-10 Verado outboard weighs a svelte—for the class—695 pounds, mounts on 26-inch centers and runs on 87-octane fuel. The platform’s all-new hydrodynamic gearcase is “engineered to improve performance and durability across multiple applications while also maximizing fuel efficiency.” To maximize efficiency, performance and handling, Mercury Marine created an all-new, large-diameter Revolution X propeller with wider blades.
The V-10 Verado engines will also be compatible with a new Mercury electric steering system for multi-outboard vessels slated to start shipping in February 2023. According to the release, the system will offer enhanced steering responsiveness, dramatically simplified rigging and a more than 50 percent reduction in energy consumption.
The 350- and 400-hp outboards will work well in a variety of applications.
The big question, at least for high-performance powerboating fans? Will the V-10 platform make it into the Mercury Racing line. At least for now, those fans will have to wait for a definitive answer.
“We are excited about the announcement of the all-new V-10 platform from Mercury Marine,” said Steve Miller, the company’s director of customer experience. “Mercury Racing is always working on industry innovations and product development, but we do not plan to launch new products at this time.”
