Inside The 2024 MTI Owners Fun Run To Hawks Cay Resort—52 Boats, 4 Deliveries And 1 Engagement

For Randy Scism, this weekend’s MTI Owners Fun Run wasn’t just his second trip to the Florida Keys in three weeks. It also was his second stay at the Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key in three weeks as the Wentzville, Mo.-based center console and catamaran builder company founder and employee Shaun Peters—Scism’s future son-in-law—showcased the new MTI 482 catamaran during the recent Florida Powerboat Club Miami Boat Show Poker Run.

Not that Scism was complaining—far from it.

“It was another great run with a great group of people,” he said. “Some of them were first-timers and had as much fun as we did. And the 482 was a huge hit again.”

Yesterday’s MTI raft-up at the Islamorada Sandbar was among the best-ever for company-produced events.

Bound for its swanky weekend destination, the 52-boat fleet departed the Haulover Marina in North Miami and Grove Harbour Marina in Coconut Grove Thursday. They stopped at Gilbert’s Resort and Tiki Bar, a Key Largo classic for lunch, before heading to Hawks Cay.

“We couldn’t have asked for better weather,” Scism noted.

Good weather was particularly important to Andrew Mackey and Savannah Richard, as the St. Louis-based couple got engaged on the deck of their MTI-V 42 center console at Hawks Cay. The weather also played a starring role in the event’s Saturday afternoon raft-up at the Islamorada Sandbar.

Just as it was during the Miami International Boat Show and subsequent Florida Powerboat Club Miami Boat Show Poker Run, the new 482 catamaran was a hit.

“It was the biggest and most organized raft-up we’ve had,” said Taylor Scism, the vice-president of MTI. “I think the boat-count at the sandbar was 30-plus, but we had a lot of people jump on with others so I think almost everyone was there.”

Just in time for the run, the Scisms and their team delivered an MTI-V 50 to P.G. and Billy Georgiou, a 440X catamaran to Shelby Smith, an MTI-V 42 to Leo Ramos and a 440X to another couple. The day before the fleet departed, the team delivered another 440X to Clark Beecher in Destin, Fla.

The weekend was particularly significant for Savanna Richardson and Andrew Mackey.

Cut from the same hospitable cloth as her father, Scism said the newcomers to the MTI event were among her highlights from the weekend.

“Watching first-timers experience our events is always amazing,” she said. “It was a fantastic weekend.

For any number of great reasons, two visits to Hawks Cay Resort in the three weeks was just fine with Randy Scism.
