Gargiulo Gets Spooled
Built for Arizona’s Craig and Kim Hargreaves in 2017 with no expenses spared, Spooled Up—a 52-foot MTI catamaran with a wild Visual Imagination paintjob and Mercury Racing 1550/1350 power—needed a good home after the Hargreaves became investors and managing partners in DCB Performance Marine. Much as they appreciated their well-known cat, owning a boat built by a direct competitor didn’t make much sense. So they listed it with TNT Marine Sales earlier this year.
With his acquisition of the Spooled Up MTI, Gino Gargiulo is back in the high-performance powerboat game.
But even when the market was stronger for big-power stern-drive catamarans, there is a limited supply of buyers who can handle—both on the water and at the bank—a boat of its character.
Enter Gino Gargiulo. Mostly out of the hardcore performance-boat market for the past few years, the gracious New Yorker was looking for something exhilarating to go along with his MTI-V 42 center console. Gargiulo, who has owned a slew of exotic automobile-themed MTI cats, had the experience and the means.
And now he has Spooled Up.
“The last boat I had was a 39-foot MTI with 450R outboards,” he explained. “I had the boat a year and put like eight hours on it, but I couldn’t stand the outboards. When I drove it the first time, I pushed the throttle down and nothing happened. I thought the boat stalled, but it just took a minute for the motors to catch up.
“You definitely get spoiled from the big power,” he added, then laughed. “Tim Gallagher showed me a 52 MTI with 1350s that needed some work, but I was afraid I wouldn’t be happy with the 1350s after being used to the 1550s.”
Though he plans to modify the catamaran’s graphics to suit his taste—they’re even too much for him, which is saying something—Gargiulo is delighted with his new purchase.

“It has everything my green Lamborghini-themed boat had and more,” he said. “Like Super Veloce, it has dual fuel systems so you have pump gas for 1350 mode and race gas for the 1550 mode.
“The whole boat is carbon fiber, and it has every option in the world,” he added, then chucked again. “It even has bow and stern thrusters which I’ve never ever seen on a cat.”
