CTS Custom Trailers Owner Curry Impressed With New MTI 390X

When Jason Curry, who owns CTS Custom Trailers in Muscatine, Iowa, took the wheel of his second MTI 390X catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R engines—his second 39-footer but first new custom-built cat from the Wentzville, Mo.-based manufacturer—last weekend on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, he was impressed but not “blown away.” That’s because, after selling his previous 390X last year and getting in line for a new one thanks to MTI’s dealer in South Florida, TNT Custom Marine, his expectations were pretty high.

“It is typical MTI—just killer,” said Curry, who took delivery of the 39-footer a week ago Friday and had it on display that evening during LOTO Powerfest, the Offshore Powerboat Association-produced event formerly known as Lake Race. “The boat is perfect. MTI nailed the graphics and the interior; and the fit and finish overall is incredible. The boat is definitely attention-getting, which is exactly what I wanted, especially since we’re using it as a marketing tool to promote our trailers. It really is great, but that’s what I expect from the team at MTI.

“Unfortunately we sold the tilt trailer it was riding on already so now I’m in a little trouble since we have several tilts on order and I don’t know how fast we’ll be able to get our boat back on a new one,” he added, then chuckled.

From any angle, the new tilt trailer from CTS Custom Trailers—and the stunning MTI 390X that it was carrying and helping to display—got a lot of attention during LOTO Powerfest at the beginning of June.

Curry, who also owns an MTI-V 42 luxury performance center console with his wife, Hope, said the reaction to the boat—and the tilt trailer it was riding on—during the LOTO Powerfest gathering by Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake Resort was unbelievable. It was the third tilt built by the company, which added marine industry trailer-business veterans Ronnie Moran and Jon Smiley to its team in April. The first one was built for another new MTI 390X that was delivered to Arizona’s Mark Rios in April just in time for the Desert Storm Street Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and the second one was for Brad Ekstam and his well-known 42-foot FASS Fuel Systems cat kept at Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo.

“So far the tilts have turned out awesome—I think we’ve had as many people asking questions about the trailers as the boats at both events,” Curry said, adding that the company currently has tilt trailers in production for catamarans from DCB Performance Boats, MTI and Skater Powerboats, along with a variety of standard trailers for new and used cats, V-bottoms and center consoles from the likes of Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats, MTI, Fountain Powerboats, Concept Boats and more.

Curry is going to keep the boat at Lake of the Ozarks most of the season but he’s planning to attend a handful of poker runs this summer, including the 20th anniversary Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan, a popular event among the MTI faithful, including Bob Kaiser, Burton Kirsten, Adam Seraphine and the Scism family that owns the company.

Excited to really start promoting the newest side of the family-owned business, Curry said CTS, which is a sister company to Curry’s Truck and Auto Repair, has been servicing and selling heavy-duty trucks and trailers since 1998 at its 32-acre property in Southeast Iowa.
