Brotherly Love And The First 500R-Powered Statement Marine 360 Catamaran – Speed on the Water

Near the back of a quiet cove on Lake Norman in Denver, N.C., sits the lovely home of Corey and Krystle Shutter, their 12-year-old daughter, Addison, eight-year-old daughter, Blakely, and five-year-old son, Evan. An expansive lawn in back of the modern house leads to a covered dock large enough to accommodate several performance boats. And that was exactly what it did in early September when 37-year-old Chad Shutter of BRP Marine Custom fame and Ashley Gerthoffer—now Ashley Shutter—were married in front of that dock.

When it came time to design the interior and graphics for his new Statement 360 catamaran, Corey Shutter turned to his talented brother, Chad. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

The Shutter brothers are close, though unlike his father and younger brother, 38-year-old Corey isn’t in the marine business. He owns a company that handles “system integration,” from lighting to sound, in new and existing private homes. But when it came time order a Statement Marine 360 catamaran, the first Mercury Racing 500R outboard engine-powered cat from the Clearwater, Fla.-based builder, he knew exactly where to turn for interior and graphic design.

“Chad did all the interior and exterior design work,” said Corey Shutter. “I trust him and he did a really great job.”

His brother was thrilled to have the opportunity.

“Corey has always been one of my biggest supporters, going back to trusting me in designing his past boats like his 28 Skater that we’ve ran together for years,” said Chad Shutter. “It’s always been a passion of ours that we share—is better than running poker runs with him  We work so well together in the boat and I love that time we spend together. So when he mentioned to me that he had made the decision to build a new Statement 360 and wanted to have me design what he described as “a BRP Edition of a36,” I was ecstatic.

“Corey was really great during the design process,” he continued. “He mentioned that he wanted touches of orange, but he didn’t want anything to busy. Interior-wise, he wanted “touches of Alcantara,” but not a full Alcantara interior, which was what I had in mind as well. Then he kind of just let me go.”

Statement completed 36-footer in September. Two months later, Corey and Chad Shutter piloted it in the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run—but started from Fort Lauderdale.

The boat pulled its first duty last month in the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run.

“We ran 400 miles total,” Corey Shutter said. “That was the most boating I’ve done in a weekend. The ride quality was great and when you turn this boat you don’t scrub off more than a couple of miles per hour. And it flies nice—it doesn’t go bow up or bow down. It stays level, which is what you want in a cat.

“Having a windshield is another one of the biggest things we like about it,” he added, then chuckled. “You don’t have to eat the wind the way you do in our 28 Skater.”

Earlier this month, Shutter made the Toys Tour event in Palatka, Fla., the boat’s first full-family adventure.

“Having that big cockpit is really nice, especially with a family,” he said. “It was the first time we all went down there, and it was a lot of fun.”

Said Corey Shutter of his brother’s design work, “I trust him and he did a really great job.”

Shutter has yet to run the 36-footer for top speed but so far he’s been delighted with its standing-start and midrange acceleration.

“Statement is tweaking it a bit so we don’t know how fast it’s going to be,” he said.

Rest assured, if he needs a bit more help with anything concerning his new ride he can always reach out to his brother.

The Shutter family’s first boating adventure on their new catamaran happened earlier this month at the Toys Tour in Palatka, Fla.
