St. Clair River Classic Presented By Magna Returning In Late July

Between the blue-green hues of the St. Clair River and the wild graphics of the raceboats that compete on it each year, the St. Clair River Classic could be the most colorful race on the Offshore Powerboat Association schedule. Celebrating its 29th anniversary, Detroit Metro-area event returns to those pristine waters July 28-30.

Also returning is third-year presenting sponsor is Magna, a Canada-based “mobility technology” company serving automobile manufacturers in the electric and autonomous vehicle world.

“Partnerships with the local community are critical to the continued success of our event, as we have re-shaped how the event looks and is produced, said Steve Brunner, the president of the local Blue Water Offshore Racing Association, in a press release. “We are extremely excited about this continued partnership with Magna.”

The venue is particularly relevant for Magna this year as the company recently completed a 740,000 square-foot expansion of its existing St. Clair facility. Operations at the new plant are slated to start later this year.

“We are thrilled to be able to sponsor such an exciting event that’s within two miles of Magna’s newest manufacturing operation,” said Greg Ross, general manager of Magna Electric Vehicle Structures, in the release. “It’s a great opportunity for us to support the community and potentially attract new and future employees.”

With the weekend’s Eastlake Grand Prix in Ohio on tap, LOTO Powerfest in Central Missouri in the books and the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix canceled, the St. Clair River Classic will be the third race of the Offshore Powerboat Association season. In addition to this weekend’s event in Ohio and the Michigan race later this, the outfit has four more regular-season contests on its schedule ahead of the OPA Englewood Beach Waterfest World Championships November 16-19 in Englewood Beach, Fla.
