Powerboat P1 Moves New Orleans Race Dates
Powerboat P1 has set a new date of June 27-29 for its inaugural New Orleans event, which is part of the offshore powerboat racing producer’s new Triple Crown series. The previous dates of June 20-21 conflicted with that of the Shootout Offshore event at Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri.
Both events are sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association.

The change was announced in a press release this morning.
“New Orleans will kick off our new P1 Offshore Triple Crown series at Lake Pontchartrain in southeastern Louisiana, with the six-race challenge then heading to Sheboygan in August and St. Petersburg in early September,” said Thomas Covington, the head of P1 Offshore USA.
“Over the coming weeks, we will be unveiling further details of the Triple Crown event sponsors and partners, prize money and race schedules,” he continued. “All three rounds will be broadcast on MAVTV and our P1 live streaming platforms, with FanDuel Sports Network and leading international sports channels broadcasting post-event coverage.”
The lead organizers for Shootout Offshore, as well as the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Leah Martin was pleased to hear the news of the date shift for New Orleans.
“I think it’s great for P1, the local organizers and the racers that the date has changed—the date conflict was unfortunate,” she said. “We applied for both the race sanctioning and regatta permits several months before the New Orleans event was announced and was unable to accommodate a different date based on the race schedule and busy waters at Lake of the Ozarks.
“I hope it’s a great event for all involved,” she added. “As they say in New Orleans, ‘Laissez les bon temps rouler.‘”
Reaction from offshore racing teams was immediate and positive. “Not having races on the same weekend is a win-win for everyone involved in the sport,” said Stephen Kildahl, who represents the Mod V owners group.
Super Stock-class owners rep Ryan Beckley offered a similar take.
“That’s good for everyone,” Beckley said. “I think that you will see some teams do both New Orleans and Shootout Offshore now.”
Added Pro Class 1 Defalco team throttleman Billy Moore, “I’m looking forward to go down to New Orleans. That’s always been a great event in the past years.”
Said Mod V-class Boatfloater.com driver Stephen Kildahl, “Not having races on the same weekend is a win-win for everyone involved in the sport.”
Super Cat and Super V owners’ representative Win Farnsworth, who field teams in both spec categories, also said he viewed the date as a positive move.
“The Offshore Racing Commission worked hard to get each class to vote on a preferred events,” Farnsworth explained. “The preferred events were then ranked by the ORC and the national series was selected while limiting to only eight races.
“New Orleans, based on original dates, was selected to be a regional race,” he continued. “Removing the overlap will help significantly to get teams to participate and enjoy the opportunity to participate in the Triple Crown.”
