Pirates Of Lanier Charity Poker Run Shaping Up To Be Another Blockbuster

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, next weekend’s Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run currently has 177 boats registered. But registration is still open, and lead organizer Sheridan Bazemore is expecting a flurry of sign-ups this week that should bring the North Georgia event to its 250-boat average.

“We usually sell out of slips this week,” Bazemore explained. “We have 209, and then there are the extra walk-ups so usually we end up with 250 boats. Last year, it might have been 275

“I am going to have a busy week, I know, because everyone signs up at the last minute,” she added, then laughed. “Especially the locals.”

The event theme is piracy, but its purpose is raising money for charities benefitting children.

In 2023, the event raised a record-setting $450,000 for charities supported by Lanier Partners of North Georgia. Bazemore is the president of the nonprofit charitable organization, which raises funds for programs that benefit children.

“There are so many newcomers signed up this year who have never been to Lake Lanier,” said Bazemore. “I guest last year’s excitement attracted them.”

Of course, there are plenty of returning participants. Among them 34-foot Victory catamaran owner Devin Wozencraft.

“Last year was the first time I had come back since John Woodruff and the main crew discontinued putting on the event,” said the high-performance marine insurance and finance man. “I decided to return this year because Sheridan and the rest of her team put on a great event, even though the weather was not favorable. Nonetheless, the facility is very nice with great boat docks at Margaritaville and the poker run village just up the pathway.”
