Thanks to today’s press release carried by PR Newswire, the suspense regarding backers for the Class 1 222 Offshore Australia team coming to the Key West Offshore World Championships is over. Both MobileX and Walmart, which sells the wireless communication service at 3,700 stores, are backing the 2023 Class 1 World Championship team of owner/driver Daren Nicholson and throttleman Giovanni Carpitella for the three-race event produced by Key West, Fla.-headquartered Race World Offshore.

“I’m excited to head to Key West and represent MobileX and hopefully, we’ll carry on our winning form from 2023. Key West brings together the best of the best from around the world and we’re thrilled to be heading back to the USA and flying the Aussie flag,” said Nicholson in the press release. “We’re a relatively small, but tight-knit team, but everyone in the team is the best at what they do. This has been our approach in the partners we chose to work with – they’re all at the top of their game and highly professional, so it’s only fitting for us to work alongside MobileX, which we appreciate very much.”

The Key West event will be the 222 Offshore team’s first stateside appearance this season. While no Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 world title is on the line—the Monster Energy/M CON team wrapped that up at the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in September—all of the Class 1 teams that competed this year for are registered for the Key West races.

“I am excited to see Daren and Giovanni back on the water with the class,” said Tyler Miller, the owner and throttleman of the Monster Energy/M CON team. “Their level of professionalism and dedication to offshore will certainly make for some great racing.”

The throttleman for the runner-up 2024 Class 1 World Champion Defalco team, Billy Moore also is looking forward to competing against Nicholson and Carpitella.

“Mike Falco (the owner and driver of the Defalco team) and I are definitely looking forward to racing against Daren and Giovanni,” Moore said. “They have a lot of experience and will be tough.

“We’re looking forward to keeping them in the rearview camera,” he added, then laughed. “All joking aside, I do look forward to racing against them. I like the team—they’re great guys.”

Added df Young/Good Boy Vodka team owner/throttleman Rich Wyatt, “We are really excited. Everyone is going to leave it all out there and we can’t wait to see the outcome on Sunday afternoon.”

Editor’s note: The first race of the Key West Worlds is set for Wednesday, November 6.
