Mercury Racing 500R Outboard Earns NMMA Innovation Award
Released in June 2023 during a Charleston, S.C., event celebrating Mercury Racing’s 50th anniversary, the 500R has earned another distinction beyond being the most powerful outboard engine in the Fond du Lac, Wis., company’s line. The supercharged V-8 beauty is now a 2024 National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award winner.

The award was presented during the Miami International Boat Show earlier this month.
“We awarded Mercury Racing’s 500R an NMMA Innovation for a number of reasons,” explained Kevin Falvey, the editor/editorial director of Boating magazine and several other Bonnier publishing titles, who was on the Boating Writers International panel of judges. “Primarily, this outboard is the first marine engine of any type to incorporate a humidity sensor in order to optimize performance.
“Naturally, the supercharger provides tons of torque, enhancing speed, power and drivability,” he continued. “Other innovations include the Advanced Racing Core (ARC), with a stronger transom plane and adjustment via seven mounting holes, giving boaters more height adjustment. An enhanced trim system features two primary hydraulic rams, plus two new booster rams for added trim authority.”
In addition to Falvey, this year’s Innovation Awards judges included veteran marine industry reporters Ben Stein, Tim Murphy, Kelsey Bonham, Alan Jones, Adam Quandt, Gary Reich, and Tony Esposito.
