Little Traverse Conservancy to Establish Nature Preserve on 56 Acres Along Lake Michigan

The Little Traverse Conservancy announced its biggest investment in land to date — the procurement of 56 acres in Emmet and Charlevoix counties that was previously the largest remaining unprotected and undeveloped shoreline on Little Traverse Bay. The area will be Michigan’s newest protected area, including a quarter mile of shoreline from Charlevoix to the Mackinac Bridge, reports News Channel 3.
Now known as Enji-minozhiiyaamigak, meaning “The Place of Peacefulness” in Anishinaabemowin, the area will be universally accessible, allowing for walkers, wheelchairs and strollers. The leading donor requested all signs be written in Anishinaabemowin first and English second, honoring the Bay Shore Band of Odawa who first lived on the land. “This is an inclusive term, a place of serenity and calmness for all living things: people, animals, trees, plants, and everything there and passing through,” LTC shared on their website.
The land purchase was made possible from donations from the Terence and Jennifer Adderley Foundation, Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor Foundation, an anonymous lead donor, and hundreds of additional donors.
