With the first race of the American Power Boat Association/Union International Motonautique Offshore World Championships for the catamaran classes in Key West, Fla., exactly two weeks away, teams are busy with final prep and testing before they head for the city at the end of the road. Among them is the Super Stock-class CELSIUS team of driver/owner Chris Hopgood and throttleman Ryan Beckley, and yesterday they headed out on Sarasota (Fla.) Bay in their 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran for their final test session before they depart for Key West.

With no less than 12 Super Stock teams slated to compete next month, they know they need to be as ready as possible. So they’ve been making a few modifications to their 32-footer.
“We recently made some minor bottom changes with Destination Marine and had power steering installed by Grants Signature Racing,” said Beckley. “We wanted to test boat with those changes. It all went without a hiccup. We ran three sets of props and collected some data.”
Like most teams headed to Key West, CELSIUS will test again on Tuesday before the Wednesday contest. But for Beckley, who grew up in the tiny city at the end of the Florida Keys, the final races of the year are particularly significant.
“I’m looking forward to heading ‘home’ for an awesome week, and to showcase for our partners Celsius, Teasers and Route Transport,” he said.
