Sometimes a photo tricks the eye. At first glance, you view it as something different than it actually is until the true content of the image—pun intended—comes into focus.

Such is the story of the photo above featuring the Bracket 700 Ella’s Nightmare and Atomic Velocity from last weekend’s Lake Race—the second event in the eight race American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series—on the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri. Look at it quickly and you might see one small V-bottom with two mis-matched outboard engines and three racers sharing the cockpit.
Or you may even see one weird catamaran with three pilots and two mis-matched outboards.
But what you’re actually looking at is Bracket 700-class racers Micheal Stancombe and his son, Dominick, in Ella’s Nightmare running deck to deck with cockpit duo of Ricardo Maldonado and Cesar Perez in Atomic Velocity. Ella’s Nightmare finished fifth in the six-team contest and Atomic Velocity took sixth.
