Last night’s street party and powerboat exhibition—the first act of this weekend’s 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run—was true to its setting in downtown in Clayton, N.Y.  And that means charming and laidback. Life moves casually in the tiny town on the shores of the St. Lawrence River separating the United States and Canada, and that translated to a mellow vibe for visitors and locals checking out the hardware from event backers DCB Performance Boats, MTI, Mystic and Nor-Tech.

No strangers to powerboat street displays, MTI’s Taylor Scism and Shaun Peters knew exactly where to be last night in downtown Clayton, N.Y. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

The display covered a short city block. Anyone in a rush could have seen it all in a few minutes. But no one in the crowd appeared to be in a hurry on a night that started with a few rain showers and became the perfect summer evening in an equally perfect summer town.

Fresh from last weekend’s Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan, Taylor Scism and Shaun Peters of MTI found the perfect spot to enjoy the view of downtown Clayton and the spectators strolling through it. They were among the marine industry faces in the crowd including Mercury Racing’s Steve Miller, John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats, high-performance marine insurance man Devin Wozencraft and his Lake of the Ozarks representative Scott Kottmann and Jeremy Cohen of Clayton-based Seabound Yachts.

Most of the 100 boats in this weekend’s poker run will arrive today. The morning kicks off with rides—some 90 of them—for children in the Make-A-Wish of Central New York program and their families. By the end of the day, Clayton will become a busy place and the 1,000 Islands Harbor Hotel will become the event’s epicenter.

But the first act of the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run is complete, and it was perfect.
