HURRICANE IAN MARINE INDUSTRY RELIEF FUND DISTRIBUTES $69,500.00
FORT MYERS,FL — As we approach the one-year anniversary of the devastation brought to southwest Florida by Hurricane Ian, the Marine Industries Association of Southwest Florida and Tampa Bay (MIA) and the Old Salt Fishing Foundation has wound down its Boaters Helping Boaters Fund. The fund was established to provide relief to those who make a living on the waterfront directly impacted by the storm.
“We are very proud that this grass roots effort was supported by so many of our members, and other marine businesses and associations around the country”, said MIA president Hans Wilson.
Several Marine Industry owned boat shows including the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, St. Petersburg Boat Show, and the Fort Myers Boat Show provided attendees the option to donate to the fund when purchasing admission tickets.
In total, the fund raised $69,500.00 and awarded 139 individuals who make their living on the water with a $500 check each. “Every single dollar matters now more than ever, each dollar you send our way is a blessing.”- Fund Recipient
The fund was established by the MIA in partnership with the Old Salt Fishing Foundation. The foundation handled the administration of receiving and disbursing the fund. Applications were reviewed and approved by a joint committee from both organizations.
“I want to thank everyone who donated for making this happen,” said Wilson. “These checks went to employees of our members, charter captains, law enforcement personnel, tour guides, boat detailers and many others. I cannot tell you how gratifying it has been to receive the thanks of those who truly appreciated the help they received from within the industry.”
