Great Lakes Grand Prix To Command Full Super Stock Fleet

Though this weekend’s XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix, in Michigan City, Ind., isn’t part of the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series, that isn’t stopping offshore racing’s entire Super Stock class fleet from competing in the Offshore Powerboat Association-produced event. According to class representative Ryan Beckley, there could be as many as 14 teams in Sunday’s Super Stock-class contest.

The event has been on the Super Stock-class owners group’s internal national championship schedule since before the 2024 season began.

“Michigan City always rolls out the red carpet for the races,” Beckley explained. “And Lake Michigan always has varying conditions that challenge us, for sure. The whole event, parade, parties and race is so well done. The amount of fans that come out and watch and walk through the pits is awesome.

“The Super Stock class as a whole loves to put on the best racing possible for everyone and be part of the big show,” he continued. “The OPA has helped to keep the site going, and as a class we voted to have it on our schedule. We should have all the teams we had at Shootout Offshore, plus Northwing.”

Defending Super Stock-class world champion Reese Langheim, the owner and driver of the Jackhammer team, also said he’s looking forward to the event. Like Beckley’s Atlas/BCC Fiber team, the Jackhammer team was among the five Super Stock outfits that competed in last weekend’s St. River Classic, which also isn’t part of the APBA series.

“The track is always sporty in Michigan City,” he said. “And the fans at the parade and on the beach really make us feel welcome.”
