Though the Hurricane Ian relief fundraiser for the Cape Coral Caring Center—a 32-year-old food pantry and community service outfit in Southwest Florida—less than a full week ago, $100,713 has already been donated to the nonprofit organization. Per their own fundraising pledges, Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats, which has facilities in Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach, and Mercury Racing of Fond du Lac, Wis., have already provided $25,000 a piece in matching funds.

That means the two high-performance industry companies are responsible for roughly half of the current total. Both had set deadlines of October 31 for their matching contributions.

“For now, we have met our goal,” said Trond Schou, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Nor-Tech. “Without wanting to sound in any way cocky, we are not surprised this happened so quickly. We have such a wonderful network of clients, dealers and vendor-partners like Mercury Racing. From the beginning, they all asked us what they could to help.
“There are still a lot of Nor-Tech families struggling,” he added. “But we feel it’s important to reach out as far as we can. And people have been stepping up.”
Mercury Racing stepped up immediately to support hard-hit Southwest Florida communities as well as Nor-Tech.
Though the $25,000 per company matching-fund total has been reached well in advance of its deadline, the Cape Coral Caring Center is still accepting donations.
“There’s still so much work to do,” added Schou. “We feel like this is just the beginning. But thanks to everyone’s generosity, we’re have a good start.”
Julie Ferguson, the executive director of the Cape Coral Caring Center, agreed.
“We are just so overwhelmed and grateful for this huge donation,” she said. “I will say that things in our community are getting better, but the community will continue to need help for a long time.
“I just received an email from a woman who we had helped in the past,” Ferguson continued. “She had been working two jobs—that’s how she was able to make ends meet. But she lost one of them to Hurricane Ian so she said she’ll be coming to see us again.
Ferguson paused for a moment.
“Our message is simple,” she said. “Please come in. Because we will help you.”
