Farallon Islands Challenge Called Off For 2023

Farallon Islands Challenge Called Off For 2023

Originally set for August 23-27 with long and short courses, the 2023 Ocean Cup Series Farallon Islands Challenge in Northern California has been scrubbed. Though three teams had signed up for the offshore powerboating endurance event and the organizers were hoping more would enter, additional entries didn’t materialize—at least to cover the costs of producing the event, according to Southern California-based Ocean Cup Series representative Janet Wilson.

The Farallon Islands Challenge has been canceled this year, but that will give the Patriotic Duty team more time to prepare for its September attempt to run from San Francisco to Marina del Rey. Photos by Neil London copyright Ocean Cup.

“It really came down to the expenses of putting it on compared to how many boats would be registered, so we decided it would be prudent to wait until next year do it,” Wilson explained. “We are going to be refocused on the Patriotic Duty team and their San Francisco to Marine Del Rey and then down to Long Beach record run.”

Longtime friends from Discovery Bay, Calif., Tony Adams, Allen Bellinghausen and Steve Seaton of the Patriotic Duty team run an Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats GTX 47 V-bottom powered by Mercury Racing 1350 engines. Though the trio was looking forward to the Farallon Islands Challenge as it would have been a “local” event for them, the cancelation gives them some welcome breathing-room between now and September 14-16, the current schedule for the challenging, open-ocean trek from Northern to Southern California.

“Canceling was actually a positive for us so we can fully focus on the big run and get more at-sea practice days,” said Bellinghausen. “We are now fully engaged and focused on the San Francisco to Marina del Rey run in September.”

A trio of close friends from Northern California, Tony Adams, Allen Bellinghausen and Steve Seaton now have their eyes on a bigger offshore endurance racing prize.
