Dekrone Finds ‘Niche’ With Sunset Boats Sales

Two years ago this month, Tom and Tracey Dekrone were recruited to take total strangers for rides in their new Mystic Powerboats M3800 catamaran. The occasion? A media event showcasing Mercury Racing’s addition of its Advanced Mid-Section to its 300R outboard engine head at Captiva Island, Fla.

Then based in Long Island, N.Y,, but spending more and more time at their second home in Naples, Fla., the Dekrones delivered a full day of demo rides and superb representation for Mercury Racing and Mystic for the marine media types on hand.

Now, Tom and Tracey Dekrone live full-time in Naples, and Tom has joined the marine industry with Sunset Boat Sales, a licensed full-service marine brokerage firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that specializes in the high-performance center console, catamaran and V-bottom sportboat market. He’s working closely with company founder and marine industry veteran Martin Sanborn and Jason Clark, who handles the Tampa Bay market for Sunset.

“Tom has 40 years of boating experience and combined with the range of boats he has owned and sold, his knowledge will be a tremendous asset to the team and bring will exceptional value to our customers,” said Sanborn, in a press release from Sunset Boat Sales. “Though his latest boat is a quad-outboard Mystic M3800, he has experience in everything from ski-boats to large cruisers.”

For Dekrone, his new role with Sunset Boat Sales is something of a long-held dream come true.

“From the time I read my first article in Powerboat magazine back in the ’80s, I knew I wanted to be involved in the marine Industry—I was just not sure in what capacity,” Dekrone explained. “Sometimes life takes you down a different path, but I never lost my passion for high-performance boating and the industry that surrounded it.

“Some four decades later, I met Martin Sanborn through some business dealings,” he continued. “I found his understanding and knowledge of the boating industry unrivaled and his reputation is first-class. I’m excited and honored to have this opportunity with his premier brokerage business.”

Added Mystic principal John Cosker, “I think Tom and Martin will be a great team.”

Dekrone is an avid member of Fort Myers Offshore, a nonprofit, Southwest Florida-based powerboat club that raises college and trade/technical scholarship funds for deserving students. With his new role at Sunset Boat Sales, his immersion in the high-performance boating world is complete.

“It may have taken 40 years, but I have finally found my niche,” he said. “I believe if you keep your passion for the things you enjoy and surround yourself with good people, good things will come.”
