Countdown To Cumberland: Registration And Wristbands Now Available For 17th Annual Kentucky Poker Run

One of the coolest poker runs in the country since its inception 17 years ago, Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland Poker Run is returning to the one-and-only State Dock in Jamestown for another fun-filled few days on the scenic waterway. And get ready, this year organizers have a Totally 80’s-themed event planned for the Sept. 7-9 gathering that they believe is going to create the “most unbelievable atmosphere.”

Here’s what is hard to believe: the “Countdown to Cumberland” is less than 45 days away. The good news is that participant registration recently opened as did weekend wristband sales, which provide individuals—21 and over—with access to the Friday and Saturday night afterparties featuring DJ AL and DJ Xtina, two of the hottest entertainers in the area.

“We’ve got a great event planned this year—between the cool boats and an incredible atmosphere, this is going to be the poker run you don’t want to miss,” said Shanalda Burden, the Southeastern Regional Marketing Specialist for Suntex Marinas, which owns State Dock. “We’re going to have more food trucks and vendors on site, and sweet swag bags for the participants. We’re so grateful for all of the performance boaters who come out to enjoy one of the most beautiful lakes in the country as well as the amazing sponsors that continue to support this event.”

One prominent business that is returning again and has been a sponsor almost every year is Sunsation Powerboats of Algonac, Mich. Joe Schaldenbrand, one of the company’s owners, attended the first poker run and has been going ever since because it’s one of his favorite events of the year thanks to the location and the amount of Sunsations that participate. (That’s him pictured at State Dock with the Sunsation flag.)

“Sunsation been a sponsor of the poker run for about 15 years and the turnout of Sunsations attending the event grows every year,” said Ryan Wenk, Sunsation’s director of sales and marketing. “I believe we had more boats in that run last year than any other manufacturer, both sportboats and center consoles combined. We are hoping to cater to ‘Sunsation Nation’ this year and host some special stuff for Sunsation owners—possibly a dinner and a photoshoot. We’ll be working on those plans after next week’s Sun Run.

“It’s amazing to see the turnout of boats—not just Sunsations—at the poker run,” he continued. “It’s such a fun event because it’s one of the last big poker runs of the summer so everyone is laid back and there to enjoy the beautiful scenery Lake Cumberland has to offer.”

Sharing a similar viewpoint about the event from a completely different part of the country, Jeff Johnston, president of DCB Performance Marine, has enjoyed the run with DCB customers several times and can’t wait to return this year.

“We should have six or seven DCBs in the run this year,” said Johnston, who has been overseeing the final steps of the company’s relocation to Phoenix from Southern California following the recent ownership change, which he called extremely positive for the future of DCB. “The Lake Cumberland Poker Run is always on our calendar. Whether it’s myself or Tony Chiaramonte—or both like we did in 2018 when we took our first M33R Widebody catamaran on a demo tour—we’re going to be there to support our customers and represent DCB. I think we’ve been a sponsor for 10-plus years now. The different marinas and destinations, such as 76 Falls, are cool; plus the views and scenery are amazing wherever you are on the lake.”

As you can see, the Countdown to Cumberland is on. If you haven’t already registered, purchased wristbands or signed up as a sponsor for the 17th annual Lake Cumberland Poker Run hosted in Jamestown, Ky., you can do so by clicking here.
