Binks Fun Run For Addiction Awareness Changes Dates To Schedule Overlap

Founded three years ago by Kurt Binkley to honor his son, Travis, who died from a fentanyl overdose at age 23, the Binks Fun Run For Addiction Awareness on North Carolina’s Lake Norman has grown each year. Binkley and his friend and co-organizer, Chad Shutter, the man behind locally headquartered BRP Marine Custom, want that success to continue. So when they noticed that the event’s original dates conflicted with those of the South Carolina-based Hartwell Lake Charity Fun Run benefiting Meals On Wheels – Anderson, they decided to make a change.

Originally set for June 14-15, the Binks event has been rescheduled for June 6-7.

“When we met in the off-season, we decided to keep the Father’s Day weekend dates, June 14-15, that we had used last year as it just kind of made sense and dovetailed with the spirt of our run,” Shutter explained. “Then we learned those were the dates for Hartwell Lake so we moved our run forward a week to June 6-7 to make sure that our fellow boaters have the opportunity to try to enjoy both events and support the amazing causes each benefit.

The 2024 Binks Fun Run For Addiction Awareness raised almost $24,000 for its cause.

We know June is a very busy boating month for most of the community, and we hope that moving the dates does not deter anyone from joining us in our pursuit of raising money to benefit addiction awareness and helping those in need,” he continued. “For those looking for a laid-back, fun, family-oriented boating weekend on the water, we hope to see you at the 2025 Binks Addition Awareness Fun Run and then the following weekend at the Meals on Wheels run in South Carolina.”

Said Kurt Binkley of his son, Travis, “He was the kind of kid who tried to save everyone else, even when he was in trouble. But he couldn’t save himself.”

As the did in 2024, all proceeds from the event Restoration Road Ministry, Inc. The organization focuses on addiction prevention and recovery, harm reduction, families and children affected by addiction.
