Alaska King Crab Back In High Demand for Holidays at $74.95+ a Pound
Bristol Bay red king crab, back on the market for the first time in three years, is a hot seller for the holidays at prices all over the board for the holiday season.
Dozens of boxes filled with orders of 5-to-10 pounds of frozen legs and claws were being readied for overnight shipment from 10th & M Seafoods in Anchorage on Dec. 16, most of them enroute to the continental United States.
“For a lot of people it’s a Christmas or New Year’s tradition,” Tito Marquez of 10th and M Seafoods in Anchorage, said. And even with all those winter holiday orders to fill, Marquez said he expects to have enough left to fill Valentine’s Day orders.
10th & M’s price is $74.95 a pound. Sockeye salmon fillets, another perennial favorite, were selling for $14.95 a pound.
Anchorage seafood retailer FishEx was advertising fresh caught, flash frozen Alaska red king crab for $87.95 a pound and giant red king crab legs for $129.95 a pound. At Fred Meyer, a Kroger market, the price was $73.74 a pound and Carrs-Safeway had it at $54.95 a pound.
Seattle’s famed Pike Place Fish Market had a holiday special going for a king crab gift box of two pounds of king crab, paired with the shop’s famous cocktail sauce, a Pike Place Market canvas shopping bag and canvas cooking apron for $289.99, shipping costs included.
For those who prefer having their Bering Sea red king crab served up by a professional chef, there’s always dinner at fine restaurants like Orso in Anchorage, where a pound and a quarter of steamed Bering Sea red king crab, with spinach couscous and a vegetable medley is priced at $130 per serving.
