Christmas came early on Wednesday for Justin Wagner and the team at Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach, Mo., as the Lake of the Ozarks-based marine audio, upholstery and fabrication shop obtained its “blank canvas” 36-foot Doug Wright Powerboats catamaran, the first boat acquired by Waves and Wheels as an authorized dealer for the Melbourne, Fla.-based builder.

“It’s exciting to have our first Doug Wright in hand,” said Wagner, who has already started templating it for interior and rigging features and the new Waves and Wheels-designed windshield being produced by Lee Aerospace in preparation for getting the boat into one of the in-house paint booths. “I’m chomping at the bit to start working on it. We’re eager to put our spin on such a proven and highly regarded powerboat. We’ve worked on several Doug Wrights throughout the years and we have more than 20 years in custom boat upgrades and restorations, so being able to start with a blank slate is going to be way more efficient for our production and our creativity.
“Honestly, this is like a dream come true for me,” added Wagner, who founded Waves and Wheels in 2001 and was featured in the final episode of the inaugural 2021 season of Speedonthewater.com’s In The Lead series. “I’ve always wanted to have a Waves and Wheels edition boat, and for that to be possible with one of the most respected brands in the industry is amazing—I don’t know how else to describe it. I have to thank the team at Doug Wright for trusting us with their boats. We have some cool things in store for the Waves and Wheels models. ”
Wagner said the model change for 2023, which he’s calling the 36 Carbon Waves and Wheels edition, is “going to look like a whole new boat when we’re done with it,” adding that the all-carbon 36-foot cat was an incredible sight on its trailer sitting next to the docks at The Boardwalk at Waves and Wheels, his marina at mile marker 26.
Waves and Wheels is officially a Doug Wright dealer—at least that’s what Justin Wagner thought as he looked down on the company’s first 36-footer from his office on the second floor of The Boardwalk at Waves and Wheels.
“We can’t wait to see what Justin and his team can do with our boats,” said Jr. Adan, one of three partners who invested significantly into Doug Wright Powerboats earlier this year (read the story). “He has several boats coming and we’re encouraging customers to call Waves and Wheels, us or our dealer in Arizona, Maxed Out Marine, if they’re interested in ordering a boat. We’ve been busy improving production and bringing everything in-house so we can deliver complete boats.
“It’s nice to have Waves and Wheels as an option for our customers,” he added. “We have great confidence in their ability to design, paint, rig and finish boats. We’re hopeful the Waves and Wheels editions will become Doug Wright’s ‘Shelby’ models.”
Adan said the company currently has a noteworthy 30-plus boats on order from its catamaran lineup that ranges from 32 to 44 feet.
Both Wagner and Adan added that the only options for people to get a completed Doug Wright Powerboats catamaran is factory-direct or through Maxed Out Marine in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and, of course, Waves and Wheels, which is the only dealer finishing out the boats for its customers.
“We just want to be clear, if you think you have a boat on order and it’s not directly with Doug Wright, Waves and Wheels or Maxed Out Marine, you do not have one coming,” Wagner said. “The guys at Doug Wright and I have received some phone calls from clients who thought they had a Doug Wright on order, but they don’t. The only way to get a new ‘authentic’ Doug Wright is by calling the factory or one of the company’s two dealers.”
Wagner expects to have his next bare hulls—a 42-footer, followed by two 39s—early next year and is pushing to have all of the boats ready for summer delivery. For now, the first 36-foot cat, which features twin Mercury Racing 450R engines for power, is the focus for the team at Waves and Wheels. Well that and the many winter projects that the company has stacked up for interior overhauls, stereo conversions and more.
