Racing: Super Cat And Class 1 Time Trials On Tap Today For Great Lakes Grand Prix
–>
If the current published schedule holds, starting-order time-trials for the Super Cat class are underway today in Michigan City, Ind., in advance of tomorrow’s PlayTradez Great Lakes Grand Prix. They will be followed by time trials for the four Class 1 teams in town for the third of eight races in the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series.

Though time trials were standard fare for Class 1 during its heyday, they returned to this year’s series at the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in Southwest Florida last month. But for the Super Cat class, today’s time-trials on the Lake Michigan course are a first for the third-year American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series.
With six teams in the mix, today’s Super Cat time trials were driven by the class itself following the Sarasota event.
“We are stoked for sure,” said Grant Bruggemann, the throttleman for the Pro Floors Racing Super Cat team fielded by owner/driver Wayne Valder of New Zealand. “Having the racecourse set up today gives us a better perspective of what we have to do for the race on Sunday.
“Pole position qualifying is a great way to build enthusiasm on Saturday, plus test our equipment and team,” he added. “And giving Wayne and me more time together is always a good thing.”
Tyler Miller, the owner/throttleman of the M CON team and the representative for the Super Cat-class owners’ group offered additionally positive perspective on today’s time trials.
“The entire Super Cat class is super pumped,” he said. “The opportunity to test early in the morning, get what you believe to be the perfect setup and then go put it to the test for two hot laps for pole position is awesome
“Oh, and I’m a terrible card drawer to boot so the lane draw never works well for me,” he added, then laughed. “This will solidify the pole and take all luck of ‘drawing the low card’ out of the equation.”
Produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association, tomorrow’s event is contest No. 4 in the eight-race APBA series. Look for a report on today’s Super Cat and Class 1 time trials by contributing editor Eric Colby later today on speedonthewater.com.
