Tip Of The Spear Poker Run On Point For Sell-Out
Benefitting the Navy SEAL Foundation, the first-year Tip Of The Spear Poker Run in Virginia is a handful of boats away from reaching its planned 50-boat limit. The three-day event, which will take participants on a 120-mile course that includes sections of the Elizabeth and James Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, is set for June 27-29.

So robust was sponsor registration, which opened in early March, that it made “general registration” almost unnecessary.
“Most of the boats signed up are sponsor boats,” explained Mark Tuck, one of the driving forces behind the inaugural event. “The support has been over the top—I’ve been a little overwhelmed by it, to be honest. We divide the sponsorship opportunities into three tiers, and all of the sponsor-boat slots sold out in three weeks. I think we have four or five general registration spots left.
“It’s been extraordinary,” Tuck continued. “Being that this is our first run there’s been a big learning curve, but I think we’ve struck a balance between promoting our charity and making sure that the participants will have a first-class experience.”
Performance East, a Sunsation center-console dealer in Cedar Point, N.C., among the run’s marine industry backers. Yet the event’s “Admiral-level” sponsor, a local New York Life office, has no connection to the high-performance powerboat world.
But North Carolina’s Brian Forehand, who will run his 50-foot Outerlimits V-bottom in the Canadian Joel Begin, who will pilot his outboard-engine-powered 44-foot MTI catamaran, and most other participants certainly do, as, does Fountain Powerboats owner Matt Raymond who is bringing three Fountain models to the run. Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats owner Rich Szesnat, who is blowing the dust off his well-know Poor Dirt Famer Outerlimits V-bottom for the event.
“Richie has had his boat laid up for two years,” said Tuck. “The quality of boats coming is really strong.”
Tuck paused for a moment. “I think we knocked it out of the park,” he said.
