What Would You Like On The Cover Of SOTW 2024 Year In Review?
The cover of a magazine is its first impression and—as the saying goes—you get only once chance to make one. For the past nine years, Jason Johnson and I have been making the difficult call of what makes the cover for our annual Speed On The Water Year In Review print magazines, and in the next few weeks we’ll be finalizing that decision for what will be our 212-page, 10th anniversary edition. Factors in our final choices for cover boats include the relevance of models under consideration and photo quality as well as how all the colors, shapes and angles will combine.

So what would you like to see grace the cover of this milestone issue? What is the first thing you would like to see when you extract the magazine from its protective mailer?
We’re not saying we’ll heed your advice, but we’re interested in hearing it—at least most of it. Suggest something like “no more outboards or center consoles” and it will fall on our deaf, capitalist ears. Plus, it wouldn’t reflect the world we cover.
That said, we’re interested in what you have to say before we make our final choices.
In the past, we’ve usually combined several boats of various styles either released that year or newsworthy for another reasons. Offshore raceboats such as Team AMSOIL, Broadco and M CON have graced our covers during the years. So, too, have record-setting boats such as the Factory Billet Outerlimits V-bottom.

Two years ago, we did our only solo-boat cover to date with a Mystic Powerboats M5200 center console taking the spotlight. It was a beautiful cover as was the issue itself. We won’t be doing that this year or anytime in the near future, but it sure was pretty.
And pretty risky. Not every performance-boat fan gets jazzed about a seven-figure 52-foot center console, even a stunner such as the M5200. Using multiple boats on the cover casts a wider net, so to speak. It also gives us the opportunity to please more of our loyal and much-appreciated advertisers.
I did mention we’re capitalists, right?
So give it some thought and get back to us on either a message board or social media thread. We want your suggestions. But don’t just tell us what you want. Tell us why you want it.
And while you’re thinking about it? Order the magazine right now if you haven’t already before the price goes up.
