Waves And Wheels ‘Ahead’ With Doug Wright Production Plans – Speed on the Water

When Waves and Wheels principal Justin Wagner began his relationship with Doug Wright Powerboats of Melbourne, Fla., his plan was to have four to five catamarans in various stages of production per year. The painting, rigging and interior build-out workload made sense to Wagner as his Osage Beach, Mo., company is consistently busy with a full roster of projects outside of its Doug Wright deal. He didn’t want to stretch either himself or his crew so far that the quality of any Waves and Wheels project, such as a relatively recent total makeover for a 47-foot Fountain V-bottom, suffers.

“We are at six Doug Wright boats right now, which is ahead of where my original goals were for our build process,” Wagner said. “Our efficiency has gone through the roof. From the day we start a boat to the day we finish, I can run two departments such as paint and interior construction simultaneously, which really speeds thing up.

“We have set deadlines for each phase of production, and so far my team has been ahead of them,” he added.

Said Wagner of his Waves and Wheels team, “Our efficiency has gone through the roof.”

From the time Waves and Wheels receives a 36-, 39- or 42-foot Doug Wright catamaran, it takes Waves and Wheels three-and-a-half to four months to complete a buildout. Wagner said his goal is to always have one of each available for purchase at any time in a given year.

Co-owned by Waves and Wheels and Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center, Osage Beach-based Graphix 1 currently is painting a 42-footer going to buyer Dave Burgess. A 39-foot hull and deck going to client Brian Blought is “finishing up at the factory” and will soon be delivered to Wagner and his crew.

“Dave’s boat will be done this winter,” Wagner said. “Brian’s will be done by spring. We also have a 36, a 39 and a 42 in production and available for purchase. And we can get all of them ready late-spring to late-summer delivery.”
