Wave-To-Wave Sweats The Small Stuff

The founder and publisher of Wave-To-Wave digital magazine, Canada-born Jared Powell has a big passion for small performance-boats. He’s been writing about them on his website since 2016. He knows his market and he does his homework.
Powell doesn’t just keep up with his subjects. He’s often ahead of it.
That’s why for a lot of folks—including this one—he’s the go-to source for information on the more diminutive side of the go-fast powerboat segment.
His latest piece, for example, is about a wicked little 23-footer Trick Marine catamaran powered by a 300-hp Mercury Racing outboard. Powell didn’t just do an excellent job focusing on the “Widebody” cat’s design, construction and performance. Like the true feature writer he is, he went deeper with Trick Marine itself and the team at the company’s South Carolina headquarters.

Of course, he doesn’t just stick to writing about new boats. Some of his strongest stuff, articles such as “The Best Repower Outboards 2025 Model-Year Compact Performance Boats,” focuses on aftermarket products and projects. From technical articles to complete restoration stories to interview pieces with industry pioneers such as designer Larry Smith of Larry Smith Scarab fame, his work is compelling.
And he’s easy to work with. In 2018, my colleague Jason Johnson and I invited him to be part of the test team for the Speedonthewater.com/Mercury Racing Verado 400R Sport Catamaran Roundup at the Lake of the Ozarks. We needed someone solid from the editorial side to work with a professional test driver, as Johnson and I already had drivers on our teams.

So we paired Powell with John Tomlinson of TNT Custom Marine.
The honor of spending a full day running outboard-powered sport cats with a living legend wasn’t lost on Powell.
“I grew up reading Powerboat magazine, so to be part of something like this—I know it will sound silly—is a dream come true,” he said at the time. “It’s going to be such a great event overall. And to be riding with one of the best throttlemen and drivers in the world is just so humbling. Plus, Johnny is one of the nicest and most professional guys out there.”
So, too, is Jared Powell of Wave-To-Wave.—Matt Trulio
