View From The Pits—Coil And Curtis ‘Dream’ Team Ready To Rock For Class 1 Debut
As I write this update, it’s raining sideways here in Cocoa Beach, Fla., which is making things more than-a-little unpleasant for the teams arriving for the second event of the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series and the season-opener for the Union Internationale Motonautique Class World Championships. The channel leading from Port Canaveral to the Atlantic Ocean is stacked with white-capping 1- to 2-footers blowing out to sea.
Brothers in Monster Energy arms, Steve Curtis, Myrick Coil and Tyler Miller are ready for the weekend.
Just before the skies opened, the temporary Monster Energy/M CON Class 1 cockpit duo of regular driver Myrick Coil and replacement throttleman Steve Curtis show up at the team’s spot in the dry pits. With them were Tyler Miller, the owner and regular throttleman for the Class 1 Skater 438 raceboat, and his wife, Lindsey. As previously reported, Miller is recovering from recent spinal surgery.
Curtis has more Class 1 offshore racing experience—and world championships to go with it—than anyone currently in the sport. That’s a fact that Coil, who is running with throttleman John Tomlinson this weekend in the Super Cat-class Skater 388 catamaran, is well aware off.
“I’ve raced against Steve many times,” he said. “If there was anyone to replace Tyler, Johnny and Steve would be my first two choices. I think my man Tyler here filled his spot with some pretty big names.
The M CON group was among the earliest arrivals in the dry pits.
“It’s like going into a three-on-three basketball game with Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, a dream team.
Curtis and Coil will practice and test tomorrow morning ahead of the afternoon Class 1 qualifying round.
“With qualifying, it’s great to see where the competition,” said Curtis. “And it settles me into the weekend.
For Miller, settling in for the weekend will mean something he hasn’t experienced in his offshore career—watching the action from the sidelines. But he’s as ready as he can be.
“You know, I am mentally preparing myself for it—I’m kind of trying to look forward to it,” Miller said, then chuckled softly. “The back feels bad enough now that I have no desire to get in the boat.
“Hats off to Doc Janssen for getting me to where I am at, able to walk around and be part of things here,” he added.
Tyler Miller will be alongside his wife Lindsey, who he recently described as “the biggest blessing I could ask for,” in Sunday’s Class 1 and Super Cat races.
