Trident Expands Investment in Skilled Trades Training
Trident Seafoods will accept applications for 10 spots in its 2024 Skilled Trades Trainee Program, to meet industry needs for skilled trades personnel for shore-based plant processing operations, from March 1-31, 2024.
The seafood processing giant, based in Seattle, announced on Oct. 15 that through a partnership with Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) Trident will embark on its 2024 class of a two-year skilled trades training course, with an additional two-year post-commitment of employment with the company.
Trident welcomed its inaugural class of four trainees in 2022, and expanded enrollment to 10 new trainees this fall.
The company focused on recruiting efforts within Alaska by visiting Kodiak, Cordova, Anchorage, Petersberg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, Craig and Metlakatla, as well as collaborating with community-based organizations within Alaska and the maritime industry. Candidates from any location qualified to work in the United States are eligible to apply.
Trainees are to be exposed to multiple skilled trades during their first year of the program and gain first-hand experience as they rotate between coursework and apply what they learn at Trident facilities. Mentors are provided, and Trident funds trainees’ educational books, tools, travel and hourly wage.
During their second year, trainees narrow their focus to a specific skilled trade of their choosing. Time spent in the field will pair students with a mentor who specializes within the trade they selected.
In their third and fourth years, trainees are to be assigned to a Trident facility full time to continue on-the-job training. John Ozborn, vice president, Global HR Business Partner at Trident Seafoods, said the company is 100% committed to developing the skilled trades workforce of the future and this program is the start of that journey.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. The current class of students range in age from 17 to 33 but people of all ages are welcome to apply.
Current students can choose to focus on welding, refrigeration, diesel mechanics, electrical or construction courses.
