For the ultimate viewing experience, watching the Key West Offshore World Championship, set this year for November 3-10, from a helicopter is unbeatable. When it comes to a decadent experience, watching from a yacht in the spectator fleet is unmatched. But helicopters and yachts have one significant drawback to land-based viewing areas—their own schedules, over which you as a guest lucky enough to be invited on either have no control.

You can’t come and go as you please from a helicopter or yacht and that—at least from a reporter-with-a-deadline or a fan-with-a-packed-social-schedule perspective—can create problems. So for the past few years, I’ve been a lucky guest of Rick and Katheryn Romano of Cocoa Beach, Fla., in their third-story corner suite at the Pier House Resort and Spa on Duval Street.

You don’t have to know anyone, however, to watch the races from the Pier House. The venue is hosting its traditional paid-entrance viewing parties for the Friday, November 8, and Sunday, November 10, races, according to a press release I received yesterday from the property.

Watching the raceboats head into the Mallory Square turn from the Pier House is a rush.

Admission isn’t necessarily “cheap” as Friday is $219 per person and includes a continental breakfast and lunch buffet, and Sunday is $259 per person with the same food setup. Then again, nothing in Key West is cheap during the world championships, and the Pier House viewing party setting is comfortable and intimate. Plus, the views of the start, the famed Mallory Square turn and the raceboats heading into it are priceless.

Said Robert Spoto, the vice president and general manager of Remington Hospitality, in the release, “We love the tradition of guests and new faces watching the race together year after year at our Watch Party.”
