Tennessee River Fun Run A Hidden Gem
With the Old Hickory Fun Run long gone and in no danger of returning, there aren’t many organized go-fast boating events left in Tennessee. (Nearby Kentucky, on the other hand, has no such shortage.) Among the exceptions is the Tennessee River Fun Run, which is set for July 7-8 and is based out of Tennessee River Marina in Decaturville.
Organized by Dwain Carter, the Tennessee River Fun Run is one of the few go-fast boating events left in Tennessee.
Primarily organized by local performance-boat owner Dwain Carter, the under-the-radar event is celebrating its eighth anniversary this year. The poker-run-style run started with just 10 boats. Last year, the happening attracted 50 boats.
Proceeds from the 128-mile roundtrip trek on the Tennessee River go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
“I would love to see this run grow each year,” Carter said. “My main goal is to raise money for St. Jude. I’d like to see it grow to 100-plus boats and raise enough money to help change the lives of a few children.
“My other goal is to bring boaters together and help keep the long heritage and history of this sport alive,” he added. “This event has grown to be an awesome time for boaters to get out and run in like company.”
Registration is $60 per boat. The fee includes a commemorative event T-shirt and one poker hand.
