Sunshine After Rain

Sunshine After Rain

I’m not sure I have ever resonated with the quote, “There’s always sunshine after rain,” more than I did this past week. If you remember from last week’s post, I mentioned that the forecast was showing a lot of rain, and wow, it did not lie. Not only did it rain nonstop, the temperatures were rarely over 50 degrees, and when you don’t have a working heater onboard, that’s pretty chilly. Let’s just say that my limits and patience were certainly tested.

Evan recently switched positions at work that will allow him to work 100% remotely during the Great Loop. Because of that, he was in the office all week for training, which meant I was on my own during the day with Ripley. On any other week, this wouldn’t have been too big of a deal but because we sold my car last week, it felt like we were stuck on the boat in the less-than-ideal weather conditions. I vlogged the week, which you can watch in our latest YouTube video; however, what I didn’t vlog was the weekend, which truly revived me.

Although it was overcast most of the day Friday, there was no rain and the weekend greeted us with a most welcome sunset. It was the first time I had seen the sun since last Sunday! Mother Nature must have known how badly all of us in the mooring field needed those magical sunsets because she did not disappoint with Saturday and Sunday evenings either.

Evan was able to change the engine oil, which, of course, came with one slight hiccup (what’s a boat project without a hiccup, right?). The first step in changing the oil is to remove the used oil from the engine. When he went to flip the switch, nothing happened. After a quick investigation, he found that the impeller in the oil pump had seen better days. You’ll see in the photo, the impeller on the right is what a new one looks like. Our current oil pump impeller was missing all but one of the “spokes.” Lucky for us, the previous owner had a spare, which saved the day.

We ended the weekend by starting Ripley’s “spa” as we like to call it. Ever since she was a puppy, Evan has groomed her himself, and this was our first time doing it on the boat. The other aspects of the spa include getting her ears cleaned, her nails trimmed and a bath, but we spread it out so as not to annoy her all in one day! The marina we’re at also hosts a movie and pizza night twice a month that we were able to enjoy with friends.

It’s funny how the hard times make you appreciate the good days even more. Cheers to continuing the adventure!

We’ve been drinking lots of tea and coffee to stay warm this week

Finally saw a sunset!
