Steal A Lake Powell Experience At The Speed On The Water Key West Bash
Knowing what I didn’t know just one month ago, I would bid hard on the Lake Powell Challenge experience auction item during the 11th annual Speed On The Water Key West Bash set for Thursday, November 7, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pickles Pub’s Sandbar on Greene Street. Once I secured the trip through my unmatched generosity, for the proceeds from the auction go to a Key West-based shelter called Samuel’s House, I would call a boating-owning friend and invite him, his loved ones and his boat to join me for the adventure.

And in the end, even though he brought the boat (as I am exactly one boat short of ownership), likely from afar, he would thank me for the invite and beg me to invite him, his loved ones and his boat on my next Lake Powell trek.
Because Lake Powell is remarkable, as I learned in October during the Lake Powell Challenge based out of Antelope Point Marina in Page, Ariz. Strike that. It is the most breathtaking waterway I’ve ever visited. It is nature’s architecture at its finest. It’s the kind of place that can force an atheist to rethink things.
Does it help to experience Lake Powell on a custom-built, high-performance DCB Performance Marine catamaran owned by the likes of New York’s Kelly O’Hara and Kiran Pinisetti, as I have been for nine adventures (so far) this year? Of course it does. But you could explore the lake on an old and poorly kept deckboat and love it.
Thanks to Amber McDaniel of Lake Powell Challenge Charities, a Lake Powell Challenge experience will be on the block at this year’s Speed On The Water Key West Bash benefitting Samuel’s House. The event is scheduled for September 18-21, 2025.
The package includes event registration fees, a 60-foot houseboat for your three-night stay, one slip at Antelope Marina, a gala table for the Saturday night dinner celebration, event schwag for four participants and more.
On Friday, Utah’s Nick Child, who grew up with Lake Powell in his backyard and currently owns a DCB M37 catamaran will lead a group of boats (including yours) to some of his favorite destinations.
“The only thing is my M37R is for sale currently and I’m not sure my M42R will be ready by that time,” Child said, then chuckled. “If I still have my 37 I absolutely will. Or if Kris Hansen is there with his 42 I’ll lead the group in that.”
Of course, if you own a boat and win this auction item, you don’t have to bother calling a friend. You can run your own.
Unless he or she has a nicer, faster boat.
