Sneak Peek: The Sorcerer And The Apprentice
Unless you work at Mercury Racing, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Merwin Kimble or Matt Blechl. Both are engineering technicians at the Fond du Lac, Wis., company. Both grew up in the Fond du Lac area and—in whatever spare time they have—are cattle farmers. For those reasons and more, such as a shared devotion to high school football on their local turf, they’ve become fast friends.

And now both are the subjects of an upcoming episode in a new Speed On The Water/Scrapyard Media video series backed by Mercury Racing. The eight-segment series will begin airing in March as part of the high-performance marine propulsion and accessories company’s 50th anniversary celebration.
One more thing? Of the 16 people we interviewed for the upcoming series, Kimble and Blechl had the shortest commute to our makeshift studio on the shores of the frozen Fond du Lac River.
But that is where their commonality ends. Kimble has been with Mercury Racing for more than 40 years—he currently is the company’s longest-standing employee. Blechl has been with the company about four years. Kimble is one of the company’s oldest employees, Blechl is one of its youngest.
While Blechl is anything but an actual “apprentice,” Kimble is most definitely a sorcerer. So Kimble has taken Blechl under his wing. No one has a better grasp of the inner workings of the company he’s been integral to for four decades, and he’s devoted to sharing his knowledge with his young friend.
They are two of the many unsung heroes of Mercury Racing. And you’ll get to know and love them when their episode airs later this year.
