Sneak Peek—A Fire-Breathing Skater 438

Mark Morris and his crew at Visual Imagination in Peculiar, Mo,. have now painted four high-performance powerboats for the same privacy-loving client. The best-known of these is Drogon, a Cigarette Racing Team 42X V-bottom completed in 2020.

Rhaegal is the fourth boat Visual Imagination has painted for his Game Of Thrones-loving client.

Thanks to his latest project for the client, that’s about to change. But this time around, the Visual Imagination-dressed show-stopper is a catamaran, a new Skater Powerboats 438 called Rhaegal and powered by Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines.

For those readers wondering about the names, they belonged to a pair of fire-breathing dragons in the popular “Game Of Thrones” television series. Those of you who just learned something, take heart. Morris also had no idea where they came from before tackling each project

“I had to look it up online,” he admitted, then laughed. “I didn’t watch the show.”

Morris’ whimsical adaptation of a dragon theme to a catamaran canvas is brilliant.

All four paintjobs, including those for a 55-foot Nor-Tech center console and a 38-foot Skater catamaran, came to Morris through Pete Pavkovich of Custom Marine Sales in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Pavkovich functions in large part as a high-touch project manager/broker for his elite clientele. Though he has other fine painters on his contact list, Morris is among his favorites.

As for the 43-foot cat’s paintjob, it took Morris and company four months and more than 1,500 man-hours to complete.

“The customer wanted the boat to have a dragon on it and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do there,” Morris explained. “We ended up with something where you don’t see an entire dragon painted on a hullside. I didn’t want to do that. Instead, you see the eye and wings swept back. The whole catamaran is a dragon.

The paintjob took four months and 1,500-plus man-hours to complete.

“When I showed it to my client, he went nuts over it—he had almost no changes,” he continued. “I have not heard from him yet, but I got a message from Pete that he absolutely loves it.”

Editor’s note: A professional photo-shoot was scheduled to happen in Antigua last week. Look for a complete story on the Rhaegal Skater 438 in early January 2025 on speedonthewater.com.
