Sleeping Bear Inn to Reopen After 50 Years
Reservations are now open to book at the historic Sleeping Bear Inn in Leelanau County’s Glen Haven for available dates August 2024 through April 2025. Built in the mid 1800s, the historic inn dates back to the Civil War, and welcomed visitors until it closed its doors in the 1970s.
Sleeping Bear Dunes officials saught out someone to restore and operate the inn as part of the national park, and after several years, Maggie Kato and her husband Jeff toured the property and took on the task with help of friend George MacEachern, forming nonprofit Balancing Environment and Rehabilitation. After $2 million in renovations, the 8 double-occupancy room inn is nearing completion, and reservations are booking up fast.
“People are just so excited, which is wonderful,” says Kato, president of the nonprofit that rehabilitated and is running the inn, reports The Leelanau Ticker. “We’ve had people who spent their honeymoon here and wanted to come back, or people who had taken their senior pictures on the porch.”
