Skater-Man DeSantis Building 38-Foot Doug Wright Catamaran

A former world-championship-winning offshore racer of note, Danny DeSantis has owned Skater Powerboats catamarans since the early 1990s. The Massachusetts-based McLaren dealer bleeds Skater blood and—save for the upcoming 55-footer—has owned every model the Douglas, Mich., company has ever built, including his current 426 model powered by Mercury Racing 1350/1100 engines. That won’t change.

Yes, the sun still rises in the East, but Skater fanatic Danny DeSantis is adding a 38-footer from Doug Wright Powerboats to his catamaran collection.

But some time this year, he will take delivery of a 38-foot Doug Wright Powerboat’s cat equipped with twin Mercury Racing 450R outboard engine. Some two years in the making, the boat currently is being painted by the company’s Melbourne, Fla., home-base. From there it will go to Grant’s Signature Racing in Bradenton, Fla., for installation of its supercharged outboards and interior created by Jamie Borg of Cutting Edge Interiors.

DeSantis hasn’t owned an outboard-powered cat since the 1990s. The 38-footer will be his first build from Doug Wright.

“I plan to mess around with it in my local areas,” said DeSantis, who backs the Super Stock-class Northwing team owned by his friend and fellow Northeasterner Daren Kittredge. “I’m looking forward to it.

Of course, he’ll run his 42-footer at Ron Szolack’s vaunted—and always rumored to be “the last one”—invitational “Weekend At Ronnie’s” event celebrating the Skater brand in St. Clair, Mich.

“I think the Doug Wright will be fun,” he said. “But I will always 100-percent be a Skater man.

“So I’m used to waiting for my boats to be finished,” he added, then laughed.

The next stop for DeSantis’ 38-footer is Grant’s Signature Racing for rigging and interior installation.
