Skater At 50—Colorful Characters

Though painting Skater Powerboats catamarans is their first calling, Steve Schulte and his son, Jake, could have made it as a stand-up comedy duo. They share a dry, mildly sarcastic wit and they nicely play off one another with friendly insults and light jabs—all of which makes them just plain funny.

At the 8:13 in the “In The Lead With Peter Hledin” video, viewers meet Steve and Jake Schulte—and they nearly steal the show.

But to the endless benefit of Skater owners for more than two decades, the Schultes went the painting route.

We got to know them a few years back while shooting for the “In The Lead with Peter Hledin” video we produced with Scrapyard Media. From the moment Scrapyard’s Brad DiMaggio and I met at Skater headquarters in Douglas, Mich., until the moment we left, they kept us laughing.

Steve and Jake Schulte are a joy to be around.

They were so comical, in fact, that DiMaggio and his team created a mini-chapter on them within the Hledin documentary and also produced a shorter-form video called “Painting Your Dream Boat: In The Know with The Schultes.”

The senior Schulte began painting Skater cats 24 years ago as an independent contractor. His son joined him three or four years later, according to Tony Cutsuries, the company’s national sales manager, and though they work “in house” at the Douglas facility, they remain independent contractors.

And they’re still funny as hell.
