Ship Masters’ Association Helps Fund Transportation to Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary

The International Ship Masters’ Association presented a generous donation to the Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena to help cover transportation costs for students visiting the Great Lakes Maritime Center.

“Transportation is one of the biggest obstacles for participation, especially for rural schools,” explained TBNMS Education Specialist Daniel Moffat, reports The Alpena News. The donation will primarily help with bussing costs, opening the doors for more students to visit the center and learn about the Great Lakes.

“Really, the only cost to schools is getting themselves here,” added Moffat. “Sometimes, even that is a barrier. They have to fundraise, or parents pay a little bit, so these funds go to allow teachers to bring them when they can.”
