Just two years ago, Canadians Scott Winch and Cathy Bain took delivery of a Nor-Tech 390 Sport center console powered a trio of Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines from Double R Performance. The Ottawa, Ontario, couple enjoyed the triple-outboard-equipped 39-footer, but they were ready to make a bigger power move with their next one, which they took delivery of just in time to enjoy in the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run last weekend in Clayton, N.Y.
Winch ordered the boat with four Mercury Racing 450R outboards.

With 85 boats in the poker-run mix, the jumble of wakes they produced was a mess for all but the front-runners—and center consoles were not among them. That meant the couple had to deal with sloppy water for most of the day. And it proved to be no problem.
“It’s a lot more stable with quads,” said Winch. “Plus it’s easier to balance when you have a lot of people in the boat, and it’s easier to keep level.”
The power upgrade actually drove Winch’s purchase of his second center console from the Fort Myers, Fla., company.
“With extra power and speed, it’s easier to get to cleaner water when you’re in a poker run,” he said. “We did get stuck (in sloppy water) behind the Nor-Tech 390 paceboat and a Mystic center console at the start of the poker run, but were able to get to cleaner water.”
Winch and Bain have a second home in Cape Coral, Fla., where they will keep the boat this fall and winter. They plan to run it in a few Fort Myers Offshore events and—if the stars align—they’ll run it in the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run in November. But before they head south for the winter, so to speak, they’ll campaign in Poker Runs America’s 1,000 Islands event next month in Kingston, Ontario.
Winch described the build process as “effortless.”
“The people at Double R and Nor-Tech were all great,” he said. “They let us come visit the boat when it was in production. We’re very happy with the customer service. And we love how they handled the paint.”
