RP Elite Boating Crowd Descends On Possum Kingdom Lake
As difficult as it is for anyone who’s ever seen one to imagine, possums were a popular food-source among poor folks in parts of North Texas in the early 1900s. So abundant were the nocturnal, snake-munching creatures that a large reservoir in the area earned the name Possum Kingdom Lake. Now the Lone Star State waterway is a hotspot for recreational boating and camping. Over-hunted-for-decades, the possum population has dwindled.

“I probably haven’t seen a possum there in 20 years,” Ross Ramsey, the man behind Skater Powerboats dealer RP Elite Motors and Marine in Springtown, Texas, said then laughed.
But there may have been a possum fan or two among the 42 powerboat owners and their friends who visited the lake last weekend as part of the inaugural RP Elite Motors and Marine Fun Run
“I loved hearing the boaters who traveled to be there talking about how beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake is and, of course, how impressive the famous ‘Hell’s Gate’ (a narrow opening on an arm of the lake flanked by tall cliffs) was for our raft-up,” said Ramsey, who owns a Skater 388 Pure Platinum catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 1100 engines. “And the Lush Resort property is just so ideal for top-notch customer service and relaxation—plus it offers plenty of things to do off the water.”
Oklahoma-based lensman Kevin Johns of Instant Memories Photography, who came to capture the event, agreed.
“Lush Resort was a really cool place for RP Elite to host it first fun run,” Johns said. “The lake-water is beautiful and everyone in the group super friendly.”
The inaugural RP Elite Fun Run attracted a broad mix of performance boats.
Like the Saturday raft-off, the “neon pool party” that night at the resort with live music was a hit—and more than a little zany. New RP Elite salesman Matt Edmonson drummed up a $600 pot for an impromptu belly-flop contest that left Ramsey “in tears from laughing so hard.”
The timing of the weekend fun run was bittersweet for Ramsey and his wife, McKenzie, who “worked her tail off from sun up to sun down checking in participants and making sure everyone was taken care of,” he said. Just one day before the event, Rambo, the couple’s 15-year-old bulldog, died.
“When ‘Kenzie’ and I started dating over 10 years ago we used to take Rambo with us to Lush Resort along with my father, Todd, and have wonderful lake weekends,” Ramsey explained. “I know dad and Rambo are now in paradise above, watching over our family to take RP Elite Motors and Marine to great heights.”
Though Ramsey didn’t make any sales during the event, he said he gave several demo rides to prospective buyers in his 38-footer during the weekend. And he left the event committed to bringing it back next year.
“But before that, we will see everyone at the 2024 Texoma Throw Down and our first Skaterfest, we also will hold on Lake Texoma,” he said. ‘We are looking forward to both events.”
Last weekend’s inaugural fun helped Ross and McKenzie Ramsey take their minds of the loss of their cherished bulldog.
