Registration Open For 15th Lake Cumberland Thunder Run
Registration for the popular Lake Cumberland Thunder Run, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this coming June on Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland, opened yesterday and according to one of the event’s primary organizers, Justin Lucas, there are some cool things in store for this year’s fun run takes place June 16-17 at State Dock Marina in Jamestown.

“We’re keeping most everything the same but one big change is that we have rented the conference/activity room at the Lure Lodge and we will do the card turn-in, dinner and awards out of the facility,” Lucas said. “Participants are going to be able to come in, turn in cards in the air conditioning and have a place to sit down and eat. And, if someone has a good hand, they can stick around for the awards before heading back down to the dock for the entertainment and party.”
Lucas said he thinks the dinner and awards venue change is going to be well-received since boaters will have a more intimate, nicer setting for the post-run activities. He added that shuttles will be running back and forth from the docks to the lodge on Saturday evening.
“We haven’t confirmed all of the stops yet, but it shouldn’t be much different than previous years,” said Lucas, who showcased his new outboard-powered catamaran, a Statement Marine 360 cat, in Florida during the Joey Gratton Memorial New Year’s Day Fun Run. “We have Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden back on board for photography and we’re anticipating more boats than we had last year.”
Lucas said last year’s event had close to 100 boats, which is pretty close to the average for the Thunder Run, which had 180 boats sign up one year but is normally in the 100- to 120-boat range. Along with getting registration live on the event website this week, Lucas set up a separate sponsorship link on the site to make it easier for interested sponsors to click and sign up instead of having to reach out to him or his good friend, Dan Weiss, who helps organize the event.
While the main activities take place Saturday, Friday’s fun run/lunch run is going to include a raft-up where participants can get a bonus chip. On top of registering boats and additional crew members online, the event’s sign-up form also includes lodging reservations. Options range from accommodations at the State Dock Lodge to complete houseboat rentals.
